How to Start a Laser Engraving Business

This guide contains links to retailers. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change what we recommend.

A laser engraving business can be started for a few thousand dollars and run from home, but “profitable” depends entirely on which machine you buy, what you make, and how you price it. Here’s the realistic path, not the inflated one.

Startup Costs

Budget for more than just the machine:

  • Laser engraver: $500 (entry diode) to $8,000+ (production MOPA/fiber)
  • Ventilation and fume extraction: $200–$1,000
  • Software: $0–$600/year
  • Initial materials: $300–$1,000
  • Business registration and insurance: $150–$800

A realistic home-based setup lands between $2,000 and $10,000 depending on the machine you choose. See our fiber laser buying guide or MOPA guide to match a machine to your budget.

Choosing Your First Machine

This is the decision that determines what you can sell. A standard fiber laser handles fast black-mark engraving on metal. A CO2 laser is better for wood, acrylic, and leather. A MOPA laser adds color engraving and finer control on metal, at a higher price. Don’t buy the most expensive machine you can afford — buy the one that matches the products you actually plan to sell.

Picking Products That Sell

The strongest categories consistently are drinkware, corporate and promotional items, wedding and gift items, and personalized jewelry. Pick one category to start rather than trying to serve every niche at once — a focused shop is easier to market and price consistently.

Pricing Your Work

Most laser businesses land on a mix of per-minute pricing ($1–$3 per minute of run time) and market pricing (checking what similar products sell for on Etsy or at local markets, then pricing accordingly). A 2× to 3× markup over materials and labor is standard; don’t go below 1.5× outside of bulk or promotional orders.

Getting Your First Customers

Etsy is usually the fastest path to first sales for personalized products, with organic traffic often building within 30–60 days of a focused shop. Local craft fairs and markets are worth 3–5 appearances early on — they teach you more about pricing and demand than research alone. Instagram and TikTok work well for this niche because the engraving process itself is visually satisfying content.

Don’t buy equipment before you know what you’re going to make and sell.
